Okay, so it turns out I'm wrong! While her eyes are dilated, they're also focused towards the viewer, and pupil dilation is a sign of dehydration, not necessarily death. Based on this, I had a friend translate the pixiv page it's based on, and he tells me the original pic, entitled 'Camellia punishment', doesn't have any tags about death, and the description tells of a punishment wherein the 'sinner' is basically tied and kept from eating or drinking for days. So he's not dead yet, just being starved and dehydrated.
