As for shading. I usually go from dark to light, starting with one base colour and then building up on it with gradually warmer or colder colours. Sometimes I'll slap on a base colour, then establish where either all the shadows or highlights are on a form, then render inbetween them. This image explains it better than I can.

Never heard of The Red Book, but I'm going to recommend it over The Stranger. L'Etranger is just kinda rambly for the first half, and then depressing as fuck for the second half. It's an amazing book, but similar to Vonnegut's work in that by the time you understand what the story's about (and realize you don't want to see how it ends), it's too late and you need to see how it ends.
