I feel like I'm qualified to answer this question. Thank you for being civil with it. We don't get that enough, and it's really nice.
The answer, truthfully, is that this fandom here in it's current state does not do the whole "brony" thing. Now, if someone tells you we're not a fandom, they're a fucking liar, but that's different.
The "Brony" thing WAS us, though. We coined the term. We wore it like a badge of honor. This was months ago. This fandom was always kind of shit. Charming, hearnest, so the shit wasn't readily apparent. There was a stretch toward the beginning where it seemed like things were actually going to get good, but not. People's inner internet started to leak out. The first shippers appeared immediately.
Small in number, but there. A very vocal minority. Within a week, we had an influx of fanart. As someone who saw this personally, and has been around from the very beginning, I can tell you that this is not so very different than how many other fandoms here on 4chan start. It's not that shocking, really.
Things were calm for a while. As the fanfiction and fanart and eventually porn and gore/rape/ridiculous-ship fanfiction started to ramp up in volume and... "quality", people felt the need to identify themselves differently from the people who were doing the exact same thing as them.
The term Brony cropped up, seemingly as a joke at first, because it's kind of stupid sounding, but I guess it's stuck, so hey. |
