Topic for world building and speculation? I do enjoy it, but I need a starting point to really get going. Any ideas?
I've actually been thinking about religion in Equestria. It could potentially be a lot more complex than "here are two gods, we worship them". Any thoughts?

You know who I hate the most?
Trixie and Gilda fans. Not all of them but the ones who fell bad for them?
    Why?
I mean you treat them like what happen in the episode was the most important thing that happen in their lifetime.
    Take Gilda for exemple.
She's no longer friends with RD so that means she hates her and wants revenger or she just throws her life away and start drinking and fell like shit.
It's like she has no one else on this world besides Dash. No other friends or other family members. Just Dash.
We know that Dash lives in Ponyville yet no one knew about Gilda.
Not her friends not the rest of the town.
And from what we could understand from the episode Griffons are a memorable sight.
That means she didn't visited RD for some time.
Of course she wanted to spend time with her. Also this kinda proves that they were just friends or she would visit more frequently.
Losing friends happens all the time. But no for Gilda is the fucking end of the world. I'm more then sure that they had other friends in the camp.

I disagree, in that the specifics are presented multiple times in the series and they aren't always the same. Some of it is propaganda, some of it is espionage.

The specific chain of events has never been canonically clarified though, no. That's a staple of the series.

ANYWAYS, that was a fun discussion. Ponies you say?

The same can be said for Trixie! Oh dear she fucked up a show and lost her cart.
That can only mean that she is homeless, has no other friends, no family and could only live in the forest till she either starts a new life as someone completely different or gets found by Twilight and fucks her.
Or the second idea that she trains, becomes a supermage and then rapes Twilight or the other mane cast.
She probably doesn't even give a fuck about Twilight. She may be a stuck-up bitch but she can't really think she is the best in the whole fucking world.
And even if that's true she was just fucked up by two morons that brought a ursa minor from the fucking forest.
She could have just simply go to a different town and put up a new show.
She couldn't have been caring all her life savings with her. And even so she showed some actual skill in magic. She can do other things or do other shows.
But no poor Gilda and Trixie, their lives got fucked up because apparently no one is allowed to have any other friends or family if they aren't part of the mane cast. Because you know, the whole fucking universe revolves around them.

Celestia and Luna are only sisters in the metaphorical sense. The true secret of the "alicorn" ponies is that they don't just embody the traits of all three pony types, they are a literal combination of all three. They are chimeric being; 3 ponies, one of each type, ritually sacrificed and reborn into a single new being. Its why there are only two of them: they are not natural beings at all. A better question is what ancient desperation drove pony kind to create such beings.

IF there is religion in Equestria, it might be quite a lot different from what we have in our world. Mainly due to the fact that they have solid "proof" of their divinity rather than hoping for good stuff in the afterlife and whatnot.

A clergy or similar might have much more of a administrative role than one focused on maintaining faith.

All provided that Celestia and Luna are actual deities or demigods, not just epic trolls.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I was thinking of. Organised holidays, institutionalised worship, all that, there's got to be some specificity to it. In terms of an official clergy, in the things I'm writing at the moment (if you're not interested, I apologise, just skip this post and ignore me) I'm positing the idea of twin clans, of a sort, one dedicated to the support of one goddess and the other, her counterpart.
In the show, and in this setup, I can imagine there being a dedicated order of worshippers - pastoral types, though not with any of the same rules we'd have over here. One anon in MLPG is writing this fic that I'm reading, with a group known as the "Fraternity of the Sun" if I recall correctly, and it's a monastic order devoted to the ideals of Celestia as put forward in Twilight Sparkle's writings (her friendship reports) - it's really neat, and very, very interesting so far.
The clan structure I mentioned I was writing isn't so fleshed-out yet, but it revolves around a very druidic style of worship, you know? Small groups dedicated to upholding the ideals and whatnot.
A clergy seems a bit too disciplinarian, authoritarian for Celestia, who is seen as wise and very much a political mastermind. I don't think she'd want an overt group of worshippers, because that'd interfere with the state - separation of the two is best for her to effectively run the country, you know?

    >>29095394
I like the fanon that sees them as created by a predecessor race of humans, us, and left to manage the new world after our extinction as biological constructs. Immortal and godlike, you know?
    >> Anonymous 08/26/11(Fri)15:53 No.29095564
    >>29095330

In a lot of fantasy settings where there is one generally-accepted god, the protagonist often runs into a pagan worshiper who reveals to them a myriad of "lesser" gods that they were not even aware existed. These gods are usually more "personal" than the overarching deity, and will even communicate directly with the protagonist, leading to their conversion to the "old ways" that end up guiding them on their quest.

I can see something similar going on. Maybe Zecora's culture worships different deities, but that doesn't necessarily make them less real. Maybe they simply have a different function than the pony gods.

I can actually see that kind of idea working very well in an episode. One clan worships Celestia, the other worships Luna, and they both almost get into a war about it. At the end Celestia and Luna come down and explain how they are both equally important and one would not exist without the other, and the clans embrace each other.

What do you think? Too similar to Over a Barrel? Too similar to the themes of the first episode? Really I just wanna see druidic pony pagans.

I think there's so much I'm going to be saying elsewhere about religion, haha, I'd rather consider the entertainment!
Music seems like a great source for ponies, obviously. The theatre, maybe they have things we haven't seen yet, like magical televisions...I assume their main sort of entertainment is probably storytelling. I've actually been considering something along these lines, how professional storytellers, maybe even ones who incorporate magic and illusion into their stories (e.g. Trixie except actually good and useful) would probably be highly valued among ponies. Magic could potentially provide sensory stimulation our modern cinema doesn't - smells, touch, things like that. Like the 4D experience at Thorpe Park if anyone in the UK has ever been there.

    >>29095527
Chimeric gods? I like it. A sacrificial ritual that creates nigh-immortal, massively powerful beings...what could possibly put ponies in such a situation? A war against another race? I believe I was reading a fic about exactly that a while back, though I dropped it around chapter 18, when it started really being bad.

Seeing as Celestia and Luna inhabit the living world, what is the pony view on death and the afterlife?

Also, what about potential other demigods?

Do Earth ponies worship something different than pegasi and unicorn? Earth ponies would probably lean more towards an agricultural, earth-mother type figure if they had one.

While I agree on a lot of points, I do think it's fair to say that Rainbow Dash was important to Gilda. She only ever seems to do anything for herself/her own amusement and she wasn't getting anything else out of it other than companionship.

And just going from the "usual" bully personality, they DON'T usually have a lot of friends and she DOES get upset when Dash tells to her to go find some new friends.

Still, I don't think it would necessarily reduce her to a sobbing wreck (despite what some of my fanfictions would suggest). I think it's most likely that she would just now have an even bigger chip on her shoulder.

And as for Trixie, yeah, she prolly DID just move on and start her show over again. But I wouldn't put it past her to be a little pissed about being shown up in Ponyville.

She is pure performer and her behavior is actually fairly mild compared to what real world magicians sometimes pull to get audiences.

No, man, she's a God-Princess. There's no need for churches or priests to commune with her, you can just go to Canterlot and be all like "sup".

You know who the closest thing to a priest in Ponyville would be? The Mayor. Because she's the middle-mare between the citizens of Ponyville and their Goddess. The government is the closest thing they'd have to a religious infrastructure.

This is highly imaginative and I support this line of thinking.

I'm glad it isn't so bad! A secret battle between two essential, hidden aspects of Equestrian society, powerful enough to tear the world apart beneath their feet? I just can't get around it, you know, even if it is a bit clichéd, maybe a little trite. Pulled off properly, like that, in the show, it could be great, but imagine a sort of Revan-like situation, if you'll excuse the comparison, where the two gods pit the two clans against each other in order to ensure they're both competitive and ready in the event of some greater threat?
It's a bit similar too Over A Barrel, yeah, but done properly, as you've put it, there's really very little comparison. It could work really well in the hands of the right guys, and Studio B are the right guys, I say, though they'll never do anything remotely like it. I admit it would be fucking cool to see some pony druids.

Actually considering the whole sun and moon motiff, I personally think the ponies are sun (and moon) worshippers. The sun governs the equine fertility cycle, so you have a fertility deity in there that makes sense, and a bunch of options with the moon. It's this religion that gives the princesses so much undisputed power- they can move the sun and moon and therefore demonstrate a clear, undeniable connection to the pony divine, even if the princesses and the ponies do not consider the princesses themselves to be gods.

    I don't know.

Her cart was smashed and everything she had with it. Given that it was probably also her home, she really doesn't have much to fall back on. Despite her astounding sense of superiority, she likely comes from poverty...hence why she works as a traveling entertainer rather than 5 star act in a major city.

Yeah, she'd stay in character while inside Ponyville, but if (to take an example I've seen in a surprising amount of fics) Twilight ran into her in Canterlot, she wouldn't be all "The Great And Powerful Trixie condescends to greet you, inferior bitch whatever-your-name-is".

Yeah, but the churches don't have to exist for purely reasons of communion. To have another channel of accession to the Princess, one that exists solely for altruistic reasons (as many monastic orders are wont to do) could be remarkably useful. Celestia might simply like being worshipped as divine, and clerics may be able to operate on a different level to those of political officials. Clerics serve their god - if their god is actively there and ordering them around, they're a lot more useful than a political official who is meant to be a line between the people and the incumbent, as well as the servant of the people, not the incumbent. It's purely hypothetical, anyway, but point is, there are a lot of other benefits to a church for a religious icon.

Dude, Shakespeare was a traveling performer. In pre-industrial societies, entertainers had to travel because there wouldn't be enough people living in the same place to make a living off all year round with the same act.

And yeah, the Ursa smashing her cart would probably be a setback, but it's just a prop. A convenience. If need be she could do her act on a two-by-four plonked on top of a couple of barrels and sleep under a tree.

If they handled it in a way where the conflict seemed to be completely unrelated to religion, then sure, but with divine princesses, that might be a bit of a challenge, you know?

    FRIEND OFF TIME

WHAT THE FUCK’S A FRIEND OFF ANYWAY?
a long-term event for writers and artists to produce content.

SO WHAT DO YOU DO IN THIS SHIT?
Artists are tasked with drawing or otherwise depicting a scene from any fanfiction they choose. it could be their favorite, it could be their most hated. it could be a tea party scene or a climactic battle, whatever the artist chooses.

Meanwhile, writers are tasked with taking some piece of artwork and writing a story about it. They can write a tiny poignant piece, or expand it into a massive adventure which used the artwork as thematic inspiration, whatever they want.

    DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 10TH

Who gives a shit that you can spin a rope around or make a card appear in a world where your neighbor harvests his garden with telekinesis?

She has to have the props, and the flash. She has to have the fireworks and the stage. Otherwise she's just another magic-wielding unicorn...except her talents don't even revolve around anything useful to society.

And regardless, being without a home kinda sucks either way.

True. I do agree, that it's an absolutely smashing idea if they can pull it off correctly, because social strife over faith, dogma, religion, even simple differences in belief and opinion, are so prevalent in the modern world. It's certainly a case of something that would be entirely relevant, and it fits my personal opinion that children need to be taught important life lessons early, and acceptance is one. It might even make it to air in Europe if they handled it with subtlety. Problem is all this I hear about Americans. I don't know, man, your alarmist, reactionary bible thumping types ruin it for everybody, haha, if you'll excuse my saying so!

Box jellyfish are small time. The Irukandji is the worst juju. It's a centimeter wide, like twenty meters long, and it's venom causes pain so agonizing that sufferers have been known to be screaming in agony despite being pumped full of morphine.

    Oh, and another thing:
    >One unusual symptom associated with Irukandji syndrome is a feeling of "impending doom". Patients have been reported as being so certain that they are going to die that they beg their doctors to kill them to get it over with. Symptoms generally abate in 4 to 30 hours, but may take up to two weeks to resolve completely.

Its clear she does not operate by the same rules that govern the lesser ponies though. The fact she has wings and a horn are all the demonstration of that we need. She was also able to stop Twilight's run away magic fit just by touching her. Its clear her magic is extremely powerful and extends well past the whole sun thing.

    I agree with this.

I don't think she's nearly as powerful as some fanon makes her out to be..I think she has a specific set of talents that gives her a lot of specific power...and then very focused general magics that make other ponies pale in comparison, but aren't really god like.

In fact I take it so far as saying that banishing NMM to the moon was a one time thing, or something she only did with the aid of a once-in-a-thousand-year celestial event...hence why NMM was banished for exactly 1000 years.

Its not been implied, its been proven.

Celestia has the innate magic of all three pony types.
Celestia was able to use all the elements of harmony together by herself.
Celestia stopped twilight's magic crazy time by simply touching her.
Celestia runs a school for unicorn magic. How could you instruct students without the ability to teach them?

Celestia's magic is proven to extend WAY beyond the scope of the sun.

On the television program Super Animal, a woman compared her pain from childbirth to her experience with Irukandji syndrome: "It's like when you're in labor, having a baby, and you've reached the peak of a contraction—that absolute peak—and you feel like you just can't do it anymore. That's the minimum that [Irukandji] pain is at, and it just builds from there."

Trixie and Gilda never existed, Ponyville and the surrounding countryside are in an area saturated by a hallucinogenic gas. This causes the citizens below Canterlots elevation to suffer mass hallucinations. This explains why Pinkie can do what she does all the way to being in two places at once. This is why parasprites could almost level the town, and the next morning nothing is amiss. It also explains why Sweet apple acres seemed so endless. What causes this gas to linger? Why hasn't anything been done?
Well, that would ruin the fun of course. And when you own the largest outdoor asylum in the kingdom, you are allowed to have a little fun.

    >Celestia has the innate magic of all three pony types.
Which means she's unique in that she's a fourth kind of pony
    >Celestia was able to use all the elements of harmony together by herself.
To be fair, that's only one way of looking at it. It was never explicitly stated that she did it alone...maybe she had prized students a thousand years ago to help her.
    >Celestia stopped twilight's magic crazy time by simply touching her.
Touched her. That's it...again, wasn't explicitly stated she did anything but that...though while that in itself wasn't so impressive, that she managed to get close to her kinda is. Unless any other pony could have wandered in after Twilights wild spell started and been unaffected since they werent there when it started. It's not really stated.
    >Celestia runs a school for unicorn magic. How could you instruct students without the ability to teach them?
As someone said, thousands of years to learn her more generalized magics means she has something to pass on, not necessarily that she's all powerful...

Or maybe she doesn't do so much teaching in the way of magic afterall...maybe she has instructors do that and she's primarily a benefactor/life lessons teacher.

AND THEY STILL SHRIEK IN PAIN THE WHOLE TIME. I remember reading about one person who screamed so hard he suffered permanent damage to his vocal chords.

I still think that Celestia used the elements alone.
NMM was sure she one because she destroyed the stones. The artifacts themselves.
She didn't know that a pony could embodied it and use their power.
This is why I believe that NMM was banished and not reverted to Luna.
She used the Elements alone. Without the power of friendship they couldn't restore her back.

You have to blatantly disregard everything that is shown about her on screen to get anywhere believing that.

We are SHOWN her using the elements of harmony. We are shown her banishing her rival demigod, alone, wearing the element of magic. She was flying at the time of doing it, so unless the rest of the elements were all pegasi, she did it alone. And even if you want to pull something out of your butt and say she had a bunch of other (strangely invisible) ponies with her serving to bear the other elements, she was still wearing the element of MAGIC. Which means, by default, she is more powerful than normal ponies, like twilight is, except that celestia doesn't even have a magic related cutie mark.

Oh, she is also immortal. Or damn near it.

Standard procedure for stings would probably be douse in vinegar to retract harpoons, carefully remove tentacles, inject anti-venom, get to a hospital -if the sting was really bad- put into a coma, then watch and wait.

One could argue that an immortal being has more time to learn about spells and magic, and thus become more powerful than other magic users. We could assume that the Elements were a royal Heirloom handed down to Celestia and designed specifically to be used in such a situation, and that she was trained in their use and the use of the spell she used to banish Luna. The embodiments of the Elements made it possible for 6 young ponies to do the same, but not because they were trained.

Celestia is very powerful, but it may be due to her immortality and not her status as a de facto "god."

We may be shown later how she came to be immortal, or we may not. Time will tell.

Remember, this is all just for the sake of argument.

The book is no different from the show. Nothing in the show implied it was in any way false, or contained anything other than literal truth. In fact, we got the opposite, it contained a prophecy that was accurate to the second.

Seriously, when you have to distort the show, or ignore what is shown on it to support a fanon interpretation, you really need to step back and look at yourself.

The show gave us no reason to doubt what we were seeing, and never has, but every reason to believe it. Its depiction of nightmare moon was precise, why wouldn't its depiction of Celestia be?

Simple, you don't want it to be.

We can assume that it is, based on what we know so far, but we can also assume the opposite, considering the amount of leeway there is in the story as depicted in Episode 1. It could be abridged, it could be inaccurate. They do say the winners write the history, and it is a children's show, after all. There are possibilities that go one way or the other, or even both! Isn't that evidence enough that there are no one hundred percent accurate judgments in this?

Really, this should be assumed with every post. Some people are getting awfully defensive. I like your take on things...don't necessarily agree, but it's a sound idea.

Given that Luna and Celestia are clear counterparts, yet Luna is much younger, I'd argue neither is immortal...simply very long lived. Maybe in olden times, Alicorns were plentiful and each family controlled part of the world and it's 'natural' order. Something happened, they died off, the 'lesser' ponies took their places, oblivious and now do what workload they can to control the environment, while Luna and Celestia are the last of their kind, orphans of a past age.

Actually, the show DOES show it doesn't have all the facts. That was the ENTIRE POINT. It had SOME of the information, not all of it, that's why twilight didn't know anything about the elements themselves, because it was a storybook which didn't contain all the information.

Get real. Its a kids show, if the book was lying they would have made it abundantly clear. The book was a HISTORY book. It contained the history of the fight and it also gave a precise timeframe for the return of nightmare moon. Everything the book said was true, as it panned out that way in the show.

All unicorn magic ultimately boils down to telekinesis, although applied in very creative ways sometimes. If Celestia is able to move the sun, she should equally have power enough to move the moon.

Just compare the effort it took Twilight to move that water tower, compared to Celestia's spectacle of raising the sun.

But that's assuming canon is wrong with no real reason. Our world is our world. Equestria is not our world. To make it simple:
Book is right: because canon says so
Book is wrong: because I assume that books can be false
The book can still be wrong, but even if Faust herself said that the book was wrong, it'd still not be enough, because the show states something, and does not contradict it any time later on.

Nobody is trying to overwrite canon, we're theorizing about what's inbetween the gaps that canon doesn't touch.

because canon DOESN'T touch these things, it is never stated one way or another. The show does NOT state the book is absolutely undeniable, and if you seriously think it does, I suggest you learn what "canon" actually means. It is canon that that book exists, it is canon that what we see is what is contained in the book, but as nobody ever says it is right or wrong, canon does not say anything about its validity.

The show doesn't say anything at all about the validity of the book. By your logic we can't talk about ANYTHING not explicitly stated in the show, because everything they haven't shown doesn't exist.

The book doesn't exist. Neither does equestria. Its a cartoon show. The book is in fact an means of introduction to the series. You are claiming, with no reason other than because you want to push a specific agenda, that the show is lying. The book was a device to introduce the series.

Learn the difference between reality and fiction for fucks sake, and how canonicity in television works

Yes, the book is 100% true because its the damn intro to the series. It will remain 100% true until something on screen contradicts it. This is how television works,

I don't, I cannot see how is this unclear. The show shows us something, therefore it's most likely real. They aren't even saying it in a joking manner, it's a standard history book, which was probably written with the aid of someone who lived back then. All claims of the book that were later referred to were proven to be true, and no part of it was proven to be false. The validation for your fanon is that history books are, in most cases, off. We have seen no such case in Equestria. Your assumption is based on our world. You're also getting pretty defensive.
    > it is canon that what we see is what is contained in the book, but as nobody ever says it is right or wrong, canon does not say anything about its validity
Canon says it's right just by putting it out there and not contradicting it and/or not saying that it could be off. Canon is what we see in the show. Have you seen this book in the show? I have. If the book said that Luna had orange hair, and Luna would come back having her normal hair, your assumptions would be perfectly valid. Nothing similar has happened though, so things that are shown in the book are, for now, considered true. Things it didn't show, e.g. details of the battle - that's open for speculation.

The argument seems to me like you can summarise it as thus:
People that subscribe to extradiegetic schools of thought say the book is entirely right, because it's the intro to the show, it's a children's show, nothing explicitly proves it's wrong.
People that subscribe to intradiegetic schools of thought say the book may not be right, for whatever reason, within the show, because of history, or politics, or whatever.
We're never going to be able to reconcile these two viewpoints, can't we just agree that it doesn't cover everything and leave it at that?

If it had all of the details then the series wouldn't have fucking happened, because Twilight would have known exactly what the problem was and what to do. On the exact same basis Twilight's cutie mark story can be wrong. I didn't bring up Pinkie's, since it was..weird, and she might have lied, and probably the interpretation of her "equestria made" comment comes in. Also AJs and Rarities cutie mark story. You should realize you're not talking to 1 person all the time, I'm not the same anon, but there were things discussed that were contradicted by the book. And many people claimed that the book is wrong about those things, because books are usually wrong. It's not about discussing background stuff, but things that were actually shown in the book. Don't get me wrong, I love speculations, but claiming that something in the show is probably not true just to push some other idea in its place is fucking dumb. I'm not saying you did this, or the early posts on this topic did this, but some latter posts claimed so.

And i am saying that those details were romanticized.

It's a story from 1000 years ago and they don't exactly seem to be keen on historical records in Equestria if nobody even remembers Celestia's sister 1000 years after she was imprisoned. Chances are some details were changed, others added or disappeared, others simply "enhanced" to make it read better.

I know, I know. This is a kid's show. But you are stealing all of the fun out of overanalyzing it by saying something MUST be 100% true even if there is for or against it other than the book itself.

    This right here.

Provided that Celestia has in fact lived for a thousand years or more, a history book would/should be more accurate due to the fact that THEY CAN ASK THE PRINCESS.

If the history book lacks detail means that the princess purposefully omitted details if they asked her or that the author didn't ask the princess and thusly doesn't have an accurate depiction of the events.

Either that or it is some sort of romanticized story of the past.
