She might have lost her spark in Green Isn't Your Colour as well, or Dragonshy. They've all had numerous moments in which they've failed and could potentially lose the Elements. At this point, I've come to assume that the Everfree rests towards the western border of Equestria, and stretches into the frontier lands, similar to the way Jetfire describes it. Mmm. At least in terms of Equestria, that's sort of what I was going for. Canterlot is basically the Pony's Babel; it's the centre of existence for their people, because it's where their gods live. It plays nicely with the local Everfree, because it means there's this "blight" of a forest beneath the deities' noses, which sets up some neat potential plots.

I honestly can't think of them having too much in the way of cities. Perhaps they used to, but I imagine them as fairly scattered their culture being lost to time. Another theory that that idea brings up is lifted from the Saga of Recluse series, where the two forces (Order and Chaos) must ALWAYS be balanced and ALWAYS find a way to balance themselves. With a great source of order in Canterlot, the Everfree Forest came into existence to increase the chaos and preserve the balance. No one side can increase in strength or weaken without an equal effect on the other side of the scale.

This also explains why weather behaves normally in the Everfree but must be actively manipulated in and around Canterlot. The absolute order canterlot and Celestia exudes calms the weather and natural flow of seasons, meaning that the ponies have to do it themselves.
