To be fair, the clan was probably feudal lords back in the day but years of Celestia's governmental reforms and policies and a dying need for pony villages to maintain their own militia in case of wars with other pony villages have brought the Apple family to their knees. Once they had power, now they just have too much land and not nearly enough members.

This is what gave me the story idea.

Remember the episode of the Simpsons where Lisa joins the Springfield chapter of MENSA? And then they accidentally run Mayor Quimby out of town, and a quirk in the old Springfield Charter states that a collective of the town's intellectuals, ie them, should rule in his stead?

It's a bit like that. The idea is that Mayor Mare has to skip town in a hurry because of some Quimby-esque shenanigans, and she has absolutely no time to hold elections for an interim mayor. So Twilight consults Ponyville's ancient town charter, and finds out that in the event of mayoral abdication, rule of the town shall revert to the local landed gentry... which turns out to be the Apple Family.

So Applejack, Big Macintosh, and Apple Bloom all suddenly find themselves the lords and ladies of the town.
