First off, I submitted like a month and a half ago and then ended up losing the story.

I resubmitted, then I got an email back from Seth, telling me I didn't meet the new introduced word count requirement, he wanted me to right a short second chapter and resubmit.

So I got did that. I also got some back some nebulous feedback from a couple of pre-readers. One didn't like it because the plot was too similar to the source material it's a crossover with. The other didn't like it because it's grimdark and one of the mane cast is a murderer.

When i submitted the new chapter, I explained I didn't understand the complaints. Given that there's plenty of fics on EqD that meet the same description. The pre-readers never had any issue with the technical issues of the story.

Then, instead of getting a return e-mail, I got a pissy post on my fimchan thread, telling me I should have listened to the pre-readers instead of writing the new chapter, and it's now been axed from consideration.

And I'm going to break discussion here and say that I think Martin is far too much of a curmudgeon when it comes to fanfiction.

Sure, you shouldn't write it all your life. But since the characters and setting are already prepackaged, you can use it to really work on plot development, dialogue, and other key aspects of good storytelling. World-building is rough work, and trying to do it WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY learning the very BASICS of writing good fiction can be too much for some people.

I never would have discovered how much I loved to write, and how good a writer I seem to be, if it weren't for fanfiction. Now that I'm beginning to work on original stuff, I'm thankful for having honed my abilities writing fanfics.
