Zecora comes from a place across the ocean, and has travelled to Ponyville in order to learn more about the world in general (it's a pretty clichéd concept, but it works as a parallel to Twilight, I feel). She's trying to learn about friendship too, as a student of one of the more notable figures in her home country, and so she invites Twilight and her friends to come along with her. Having never been to the beach before, they accept, and after getting Celestia's permission to leave (and a montage of shenanigans set to a "travelling song" on the trip, such as Twilight forgetting her books and having to go back to Ponyville and get them, a broken carriage that Applejack needs Pinkie's mechanical expertise to help fix, a flight over a mountain range that goes awry and leaves Fluttershy and Rainbow stranded in the snow) they journey to the closest coastal area. When they get there, the episode revolves around them not having any experience with coasts besides Zecora and, unusually, Twilight, who used to go to the beach with her parents. Fluttershy tries to make nice with animals and ends up getting attacked by them, similar to the GGG. Pinkie just has to try all the possible beach foods and fun games, and drags Rarity along with her (mostly to get those two to interact more, build on Dragonshy) while Rarity tries in vain to meet people while being harassed by Pinkie. Twilight is the stereotypical boring one, who spends all day reading and tanning on the beach, but eventually she gets a baaad case of sunburn and bonds with Zecora over learning about herbal remedies for it, and other things (especially for Fluttershy, who has been bitten by crabs, stung by jellyfish, and ganged up on by flocks of seagulls). Applejack and Rainbow have competitions - swimming competitions, fishing competitions, you name it, they do it, and Rainbow tries to learn how to fly properly in the coastal currents. |
