I've actually done a bit regarding that area, since Zecora is one of my favorite characters. My approach to world building is basically combining my somewhat vast knowledge of existing cultures, local folklore, other cartoon media, things like that, and rolling it into one and working from that. Some things stick, some don't, but whatever does, I go back and expand the fuck out of. I like detail... but I also leave things vague where needed. If you start detailing every little thing, it just shatters the believability, ironically enough, and all you've done is make people read something fucking boring.

Reminds me of a technique I saw on /tg/ once. I'll griffin it for this thread, where you start off with a minor detail, and work your way up.

When a griffin general returns to the capitol city after a fresh conquest, the crowd takes him to Aviary Hill and throws him into the Gabilan river.

This leads me to other questions that help flesh out the world.

Aviary Hill was were the ancestors of these griffins were and sold as slaves.

Gabilan was the leader of the uprising, who was drowned in the river as an example to others, but it inspired the rest of the griffins to rise up.

Keep going, and you have a whole world with interesting little tidbits.

I think I used to do that until I got comfortable with my own special process. I've been DMing for almost a decade, over almost a dozen different systems (including this pony RPG system we have (it sucks)) and I've always had a passion for building unique and fun places from the bland or boring shit you usually get, and I eventually learned how to tie it all in so it blended seamlessly.

Your technique sounds like it would not only be a blast, but also a very effective method, for a bunch of people to help brainstorm things, though. I've just been by myself with this. As I conceived them in my own story, the antelope are masters of elemental magic: fire, air, earth, water. Their magic is less complex and intricate than deer magic or pony magic. It's more primal, and more ferocious. It has a lot of raw power, but it's got less intricate detail.

Case in point: the antelopes will war with each other. The ponies will not. The deer did only once (but it was a hell of a war).

Reminds me of what I thought about Buffalo. They can't cast external magic, but they can "buff" themselves. They use meditation, trances, and narcotics to get close to their ancestors, but it also has the effect of turning them into engines of destruction if needed.

It wasn't used on the citizens of Appalossa because their argument was about land use, and they went back and forth with a possible agreement.

Also, if we follow what seems to be a rule on the show, that horn size correlates to magical ability, the buffalo kind of get a short shrift. Compared to their body size they have relatively small horns, and may not be able to channel much magic.

Yep. Originally she wanted Pinkie to be slightly chubbier, AJ to be a little bigger than the others, Twilight to have a slightly awkward look, and so on. Even BG ponies would have had different builds.

The realities of small-budget flash animation made this impossible, but a few minor ponies, like Mrs. Cake, have different builds.

I'd compare it to Deus Ex style augmentations. The species that can actually cast magic use Nano-augmentations, which gives them wide capabilities, but limits them to their small frames. Buffalo have mechanical augmentations. Less ability overall, but you have a super strong body, which can take and deal damage.
