Perhaps the role of Celestia and Luna is one that's passed down..maybe they aren't immortal, simply VERY long lived..yet to ponies who presumably live an average human lifespan, the fact that they've been around for thousands of years would seem like immortality...perhaps a hundred dynasties have existed in ages past, and the current one, the one that has existed since Celestia and Luna came to power is only the most recent one...and it too will eventually end when Celestia and Luna pass their power down in a bittersweet ceremony that is both necessary for life to continue yet damning to all 'normal' ponies that exist at the time.

I've been toying with the idea that Alicorns (luna-sized, less divinely powered "regular" ones) used to be a lot more common, or even were the only pony race thousands of years ago, and the three races we are familiar with now are the result of some, possibly magical, racial split far, far in the past.

So Luna and Celestia aren't more powerful because they are Alicorns, per se. They are Alicorns because they are more powerful and therefore were able to outlast the near extinction of their fellow alicorns with the aid of their magic.

It's a bit silly, certainly, but I had fun tossing the notion around in my head.

Funny you should mention that. In that game I mentioned I was running earlier with the griffon and such, the skeleton the players found was an Alicorn skeleton, and a lot of the art and designs in the place they were exploring depicted multiple alicorns who were clearly not Celestia or Luna.

Part of the reason the three ostensibly Alicorn guardians in the tomb had a big fight that ended in one of them dead was because one of them had a Unicorn kid, and it was heavily implied in a journal that the players found that Celestia and Luna might have had something to do with the sudden split into three different races.

It's pretty much summed up in a fic I wrote called The Truth, but here it goes.

Celestia never controlled the sun. As her name inplies, she was actually set to govern the stars and keep the Constellation Beasts imprisoned in the sky while her sister acted as a night guardian for the ponies via the moon. When her younger sister refused to trade places with her for a short time, Celestia struck a deal with the Constellation Beasts to grant them freedom in exchange for imprisoning Luna in the moon.

After establishing her rule, Celestia modified the memories and historical records of everyone in Equestria do support her as a rightful monarch, as though that was the way it had always been. Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns is actually a front for a program that seeks out the most talented unicorns in the kingdom to recruit into her secret task force which hunts down and silences any dissenters and rumors which threaten her rule of lies.

The whole Mare in the Moon event was a way for Celestia to get at NMM/Luna and wipe her mind before she could spill the beans.

Basically this. I generally avoided the whole OC scene (IT GOT HUGE, just check the OC wiki...), but I still had my own. Granted, I never used mine for fics or for drawing porn or anything. I wouldn't say they were just regular background ponies, with one of them being a large, manly as fuck Clydesdale and the other.... well, see picture. Like I said, though, just for fun, no fics or anything.

It's the motivation of the creation of an OC that concerns us. If quality of the creation was relevant then people would flip their shit when somebody posts poorly done art. But I don't generally interact with the mane cast in such fantasies. So no, it doesn't bother me that people want to...but it does bother me to see bland, generic characters. Shitty art is one thing..some people have good character designs but can't get it down on paper (or photoshop) and that's fine. It's the design itself that concerns me.

They took away Tree of Life as a permanent abilit with Cataclysm. It's a cooldown thing now that lasts 30 seconds or something. I don't know, I stopped playing after I hit 85 and saw what there was to see of Cata.

Apparently now thought they're panicking and bumping up their expansion schedule so I guess I can look forward to getting sucked in again, if only for a few months.
