For the Griphon kingdom, I'm thinking that it is a combination of 300's Sparta and Japan. The young hatchlings that are considered unworthy get sent to other places as "emissaries" and political trade tools, while the healthy ones stay in their homeland.

A few months ago, back when I was active in this little fandom, I basically came up with a fan version of what the rest of the world this setting is in could look like. One of my hobbies is building worlds, locales, civilizations, cultures, etc. (I used to DM a lot), and each one of my entries was varied and and detailed as fuck.

Griffins can fly and maybe they have an adventurous streak...so they're rare, but they are known about despite not having a 'homeland'. Zebras on the other hand maybe rarer but maybe just from being so far away and not finding need to wander from their homeland.

Or maybe Zecora crossed a dimensional rift from a post apocalyptic earth and was once human.

We seriously don't have enough canon to make anything but conjecture.

Well, the thread with the arbitrary rule he made up is long gone, that should say something about the whole mess.
The Mod not only deleted threads, he also scowled at random people, imposed conditions that he made sure couldn't be fulfilled and banned a -LOT- of people just because he felt like banning them.
All complains and screencaps of the Mod bashing people kept being deleted and the posteds banned, until the Mod dissapeared and things immediately become calm again.

People says that Moot only selects mods among his RL friends, I say "With friends like these..."

I imagine Griffons in MLP eat anything they can catch that isn't a pony. They probably don't eat ponies because they are sapient and communicative (face it, you would have to be pretty evil to eat something that is pleading for its life in a language you can comprehend) and maybe some kind of ancient treaties that establish normal relations between the two species.

I would not be surprised if Griffon ancestors preyed on pony ancestors once upon a time though.

But yeah, the idea of one intelligent, sapient, feeling species hunting another always strikes me as a little off...unless they're meant to be a born-evil type of race. Oh, I'm just the DRYHooves guy, chillin' around the generals again, because I'm bored. Been running a Savage Worlds game on Sundays when I can rally up my players for a couple hours.

Anyway, the characters were all ponies belonging to a historical reclaimation society based out of Canterlot that sought to recover long lost writings, artifacts, and knowledge from the distant past.

First adventure had them exploring a cave that had a Griffon squatting in it. After convincing him to let them poke around, they found an underground bunker that had apparently been made to house a dangerous artifact, and a trio of ponies who were to keep watch over it. The place was trashed however, collapsed walls everywhere and a flooded, muck filled library overtaken by rot and mold. They found signs the three caretakers had some sort of desperate falling-out, and eventually uncovered a skeleton in one of the rooms.

I really need to stop putting spooky stuff in my supposedly 'light hearted' games, but damn it, it's too fun to set up murder mysteries.

Perhaps it's common for griffons to wander rather than live in a set location, and Gilda has spent her life in Equestria, thus, it's her first language, but other griffons would speak other languages depending on where they grew up.

Honestly, it's kind of... bad. Well, I wouldn't say "bad", but it didn't bring anything new to the table, and what it did bring was either done so much better in other systems or was just boring or pointless. It's way too simple for it's own good.

Being heavily role=play (HEAVILY) centric helps alleviate that somewhat, but you have to have a stellar DM. And I have yet to meet one. I didn't get any complaints, but I don't think even I, with almost a decade of experience with over a dozen systems, handled it as good as it needed to be handled with the restrictions on the actual system elements. It's too easy to get bored or, worse, delve into wish fulfillment or just bad roleplaying. ONE bad roleplayer can throw the whole thing off.

The one game I was a part of, not DMing but actually playing (me and a bro with some other people from the IRC) was DM'd by an absolute chump. Like, seriously, FIRST THING WE DID was find a cave full of ancient human robotic technology with guns and robot ponies begging for help and huge skyscrapers underground and human literature. What the fuck is that shit, right?

Maybe they eat HORSES, as the last episode showed Twilight turning mice into non sentient horses, thus horses exist in Equestria, but they aren't self aware like a pony or Gilda's kin.

At least Opal tried to kill and eat mice, and during the Diamond Dogs episode, we got to see some bones scattered through the Diamond Dog's tunnels.

There's no real reason griffons and ponies wouldn't get along, even with only gilda as an example, I think it's clear enough they would be able to reach some sort of understanding eventually.

Now, seeing as how one is a group of herbivores, and the other is predatory, I can see things being a bit tense at times. Lots of meal-time taboos and politely ignoring some of the other species' customs that just don't work for the other side.

Since I'm here anyway, throwing in my thoughts on the whole Griffon thing... without having read any of the discussion.

I am going to stand by the popular mythos and say that Griffons probably do eat ponies. However there are three factors that keep them from hunting in Equestria. 1) Trade relations with that country would take a dive if they started eating it's citizens. 2) Unlike the areas they would typically use for hunting, Equestria has a trained military force. 3) God lives there and would be royally (ha) pissed if her chosen people were being eaten by the citizens of a neighboring nation.

Griffons may be a lot bigger than these birds, but we've seen plenty of things in this show that could eat a griffon. The same principle that applies to hunting for food applies to gathering resources.
