Well here's what I'm thinking: In trying to make a utopia, Rarity has pitted herself against the literal goddesses of the Moon and the Sun. She's rebelling against the natural order. It's almost existential.
Naturally, it comes to bite her in the ass, and she takes it badly. So much so that as her new empire crumbles she begins to lash out in destructive wrath.
Eventually, her five friends confront her (Dash has long since abandoned her), and Rarity refuses to surrender. She declares that she hates them and that she'll kill them all- and then she loses the Element of Generosity. She's actually had it all this time, because what she was doing was generous in its own way, but trying to take another pony's life is too much.
The Element of Generosity was what was supplying the Nightmare with magic. Without it, Rarity withers and almost dies... but the Nightmare acts on its own. It declares that it won't let her die, because it's grown very fond of her- she's an even better master than Luna.
Because Rarity has grown so full of hate, the Nightmare is able to tap into dark magics, the Unlife that gnaws at the foundation of the world. They flood Rarity, granting her new power.
She declares that since no one wanted her perfect world, she's going to make them pay by destroying this one. No one deserves to live for spurning her vision.
In short, she becomes a full-fledged villain. Before she vanishes in a cloud of black smoke, her last words are, "I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME, MY LITTLE PONIES!! AHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
And then the other five ponies just cry. |
