I think avatars and OCs are mostly the same. An avatar is basically a self insert at a basic level, since they are for drawing yourself in a way that suits the setting at hand.
OCs aren't necessarily bad, it's just that almost everyone who makes one wants theirs to be the best.
Everyone wants to be the protagonist, if you will. The guy who saves the day, beats the bad guy and becomes a hero renowned for untold skill etc.
