In a previous thread, someone asked what would happen if a murder occurred in Ponyville, in the style of Jack-the-Ripper. The story would obviously be grimdark, but I think a collapse into entropy and despair would be dull.

I think Twilight would start by pairing off the mane six, using the Buddy System for protection. This would let you have three parallel storylines.

-Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie would work to set up a wake and funeral for the victim. They would find out more about the victim's past and personal life, and contact the family. With the help of Fluttershy's restraint, Pinkie would set up a funeral and proper Irish wake to help Ponyville heal.

-Twilight and Dash would work with Canterlot and Royal Guards on the official investigation. These two are the most attracted to military and/or political authority. Plus you'd have the good cop/bad cop dynamic.

-Rarity and Applejack would go on their own tangential investigation. Applejack would want to crush the perpetrator like a wormy apple, so she would need Rarity's support to help keep her temper in check. Rarity's OCD would have her obsess over every detail of the crime, so she would need Applejack's support to balance horror with perception of clues. Their dynamic could be similar to the BBC's recent adaptation of Holmes and Watson, but not as experienced.

As for the villain, it should be mundane and pathetic. If it was a real monster or predator, the ponies would heroically go on the warpath and trample it. Instead, I think the villain should be sadly broken. The horror of the crime should erode to sadness at the end.

At the ending, despite all the horror and sadness, they need to pull through. This is MLP:FiM, after all. The mane six are defined by the power of their friendship, even if you take the joy and laughter away. They pull each other through, and they pull Ponyville through.
