Professional writers means very little. A lot of them suck. A lot of fanfic writers are simply hobbiest who chose different careers.

I just look for good fanfics the same way I look for good published novels. Word of mouth + reviews.

In addition, you can tell if something is goign to suck by the first paragraph, 99% of the time. The time investment to weeding out bad fanfics is even less than finding out what blockbusters to see this year

There's no actual RULE about how staff members can't read fanfiction. I can't imagine they don't secretly. But its most writers and game designers and generally anyone making something in media they plan to SELL to avoid reading fanfiction or ideas.

Why? Because the minute you see it, you can't use the idea, or there's grounds for legal action from the provider. The way I see it, fanfics can actually be a decent springboard for more creative works; all the characters and situations are already present in the audience's mind as well as the writer's, and one person in a previous thread likened it to a set of training wheels or a preset tool kit; you have the basics, now you just need to ride it out.

And even if the writer doesn't plan on delving into more serious creative works, then it's no less of a hobby than drawing fanart or simply just discussing a show.

I wouldn't care. The lesbian thing is boring as hell. It was funny as a joke but I can't believe people take it seriously. If anything, it would make more sense for them to show her softer side, and her personality type makes her the perfect candidate to be put in the position of trying to be more "girly" (only to realize that you should be yourself and blah blah whatever.) Dash would work great with a guy that was just as fun-loving and carefree (and fast) as she was. Soarin And it wouldn't really impact her character overall since she's not the type to get clingy or talk about her boyfriend all the time and all that.

You know, since Lauren said that Derpy Hooves (Or Ditzy Doo, whatever you want) was going to be a background character with scripted scenes rather than being thrown at random, I could imagine her appearing as one of the Wolderbolt's helpers, and displaying awesome flying abilities, despite her visual handicap.
Basically, Derpy would be able to fly and maneouver using the minimal movement possible and spending the least amount of energy as well. She wouldn't be capable to outspeed Rainbow Dash or perform the Sonic Rainboom, but after Rainbow Dash tries to show off by flying through the Wonderbolt's training obstacle course (and crashing everywhere) she would see how Derpy can clear the entire course without even trying.
