I think so. I actually mostly stick to the S-series.
But if I'm correct, the difference would be so minor that it wouldn't matter much. I think.
I use S-5 for pretty much everything but change it to S-3 for when I need to quickly change directions in one stroke and S-7 for longer strokes, like straight lines, or larger curves, like around the heads.

They're all pretty linear in gameplay regardless of console. If you have the option to pirate Monster Hunter Freedom Unite if you have a PSP, try that out.
