A long, long time ago, or at least by Internet standards, when I was involved in another online project/community/discussion/forum/whateveryouwanttocallit, one person who I was acquainted with from this project posted a YouTube link to pensivepine's recording of the pilot episode in his journal. He was more involved with /co/ than I was, and I was too busy with life and school in general to be focusing on 4chan, so while I watched the pilot back in October, I wasn't actually involved in the threads, discussions, drama, or fanworks in general until probably late April.

When I first watched the show, I held absolutely no pretenses. I knew very little of the MLP franchise outside of the toy commercials that would periodically air, and to me it was just another cartoon that happened to have an all-female lead cast, with names like Lauren Faust and Rob Renzetti to go with it. Even now, I'm no more affected by the commercial aspects of it as I was when I first watched it; it's a show that happened to have a juggernaut of a crew and creative team behind it, and that's good enough to warrant at least a casual watch.

Lyra, when portrayed in fanon/fiction is almost always depicted as a reflection of her affection for Bonbon - we have other pieces of her mannerisms to go on; the fact that she plays the lyre and sits oddly - but really, almost every story about her focuses on the relationship between the two.

Would a story about Lyra dealing with that frustration be an interesting read? Something about her trying to establish her own identity against people who only see her as 'someone dating Bonbon'?

It just means people are terrible at writing Lyra and Bon Bon, which is no surprise as most fan fiction tends to be terrible in general. The problem with background ponies is they are just public OC's, you can't base a character on a few mannerisms, you have to build it from the ground up, and include them. Most writers fail in this, or just go completely off the wall and try to manufacturer something truly bizzarre by pulling completely unrelated things into a big matrix of WTF are you thinking.
