AJ should be noted hard worker who isn't afraid to get down in the dirt to get the task done; but even if you don't think she is the absolute best of the main characters, I do think it's somewhat shallow to not see a character as being anything more than a name and a career. Yes, she works with apples, but that's just a family tradition she's proud to upkeep, and isn't necessarily the entire composition of her character. No one does that for Rarity or Twilight, and doing so for Applejack just because she doesn't shine as often or as bright seems, well, unfair.
She's level-headed and even-tempered, yet influential enough to keep her more compulsive friends, like Rainbow Dash, from doing something stupid whenever it's within her realm of possibility. She doesn't allow Apple Bloom to jeopardize her business after she absolutely botched her sales, but still doesn't punish her so badly and even offers encouraging advice.
She can be irritable at times, especially when fueled by competitive spirit or an outright dislike for the other individual's methods, but overall is not as prone to rage or losing her train of thought when under pressure. We even see her, in Look Before You Sleep, actually withdraw herself from blurting out something she'd regret saying and instead re-evaluate her thoughts to a more rational approach to convince Rarity to help.
All and all, a well-rounded, respectable main character in my eyes, or at least no more or less than the others. She may appear plain because she doesn't have as many focus episodes or scenes, but then again I believe that's only the case because she really doesn't NEED them. I don't see her as a character who has to have a lot of emo-kid depth. No hidden motivations, no facade to disguise her insecurities, no affront for suppressing her hidden rage and dark secrets -- she just lives and does her work, and is acceptable for just that. |
