I'm trying hard to remember the last time I read a Fluttershy story! But I do remember one where the font size was changed to indicate her little habit of trailing away into a whisper, and it was a really effective device. I've forgotten which story it was - I'll look through my Google docs. Her voice was quite authentic in that story.

Secret to Flutters is the rhythm of her speech: she puts a soft emphasis on specific words, she meanders a little and she trails away. Throw in a few "Eep!"s and yer done!

Here's a bit of dialogue from my story "Fluttershy's Bad Dream" where I think I got the rhythm about right:

"Oh yes," Fluttershy nodded. "I promise. I was walking at the edge of the Everfree Forest picking some beautiful flowers – I think they were lilacs, or maybe freesias – when I heard a voice calling my name from inside the forest. Now, you know that usually I'd *never* go into the Everfree Forest under *any* circumstances – but there was just something about this voice! I had to go and find the pony who owned such a *beautiful voice*! So I walked into the forest and –"

I think I've seen RS (welp) do the font-size change - it's definitely effective, but I feel it might be a cop-out in some regards - the tone of the dialogue and description of speech should indicate the meekness, not a literal shrinkage of text.

Re: description - that might not be entirely accurate, it's more so the way you evoke emotion with the descriptive text you choose to use. Notably, reading your fanfic about Luna's Socks, I was surprised how enticing you made something completely arbitrary seem - it seems like you could be detailing a can of Coke on someone's desk and still be able to get people excited about it.

That snippet you posted is spot on - I think I have a pretty good grasp of the character's speaking patterns, just imagning them in my head helps - but I'm wondering specifically how in this instance Fluttershy would interact with Rarity - it's one of my favorite groupings from the show, but I haven't seen it written enough.

I agree that it doesn't make up for real attentiveness to Flutters' expression, but as long as it's not a gimmick I think it's one of those things that writers can call upon more and more now that we have all those new text tricks thanks to Word/Google docs etc.

Oh, and I think I know what you mean about my description now. I try and make everything I write about seem physical and... I don't know, I like to think of it as "the erotic of the everyday". You get a can of Coke out a machine, and the can has this moistness as water condenses on it and the weight in your hand that lightens as you drink it. I try to remember to mention the little things that life is made up of - it's a quick and easy way to get that verisimilitude happening.

For FLutters - Rarity, might I suggest Green is Not Your Colour? There's a few scenes there between the two of them, but sadly the writers obviously had trouble with them interacting and used Twi as an in between. I love that cantankerous unicorn! She always has some opinion that gives something to say whoever she's talking to.

Hey, all. Here's the PROJECT OF THE DAY.

I'm working on a pony plush crochet pattern, with the goal of making the end product as on-model as physically possible. Twilight's the victim in the mockup here, but the pattern I'm working out can be used for any of the mane 6. Pardon the brown yarn, it's only for the purpose of figuring out the initial crochet pattern; it'll be scrapped afterward.

The eyes will be sewn on felt, and hair *might* be knit. I'll probably have a different technique for that depending on what the character is.
