Portfolio's the most important, obviously. Every school I've ever talked to, they give next to no shits about anything drawn from only from your head. No made-up cahracters, poses, cartoon stylization, anything. Not even drawing from photographs. DRAW FROM LIFE. Draw real people, nude figure studies if you can. Draw your own hands, your feet, your friends, self-portraits, anything, and as much as you can. Draw still life, landscapes, whatever you can think of, as long as you were actually sitting in front of it when you did it.
This is because, as much as the school may admire your creativity and design merits to begin with, they don't give a fuck about you if you can't grasp the basics. They want to TEACH you, so they want a student they can mold, not one already with a lot of habits (usually bad) all in place.
My portfolio had a lot of stuff like this in it. Boring in concept, nobody's going to care about it except the instructors, but it's what they want to see. |
