It specifically states that Luna's own bitterness was the catalyst for her change, and that decision to block the sun was her own *before* she even became nightmare moon. It also stated that these feelings came from her own heart, not from some magic alien parasite. Luna and Nightmare were always the same pony. Nightmare is just Luna's flip out mode.
