So remember the Nightmare Main Six discussion we had last night? I really latched on to the idea of Nightmare Rarity, enough so that I think I'm going to write a story about it. I spent most of my mental energy at work today trying to refine her motivations, trying to decide just WHY she would take on the Nightmare.
The one thing the show drives home about Rarity is that she's an artist whose medium is dresses. She's very creative, and she's also very image-conscious. She's intensely aware of how ponies and things look.
She's ALSO been shown to be at least a little OCD. She hyper-focuses on detail, and she's extremely upset if things get out of place, if things are sloppy.
So it occurred to me: wouldn't someone as creative and intelligent and details-focused as Rarity have come up with more than a few ideas about how the world ought to be? It's surely crossed her mind a few times. You think she never thinks about architecture? You think she never thinks about politics? You think she never thinks about social engineering?
Rarity has a vision. It's a grand and beautiful vision. It's a vision of a better world, a more beautiful world, a more elegant and fabulous world. A world filled with beautiful ponies living in beautiful cities in a beautiful country on a beautiful planet.
But she's never been able to exercise that vision beyond her dressmaking. She's become a bigger name in fashion, sure, but all she's been able to influence is clothing choices, which is significant- but not enough.
Until she met the Nightmare.
So here's the twist: Rarity is in complete control of her actions. She wasn't taken over by the Nightmare, she TOOK it, and now she can use its power to be an artist on a grand scale, to MAKE her vision a reality.
tl;dr Rarity thinks she can run the world better than anyone, and now she has the power to prove it. |
