 Since the Equestrian Guard see little to no action in battle and spends the majority of their "on-duty" time protecting the princesses and carrying ponies around, they probably get taught battle strategies and leadership skills so that when something like a major invasion happens, they can quickly take command of militia from various pony towns, organizing them into a large army. Also, I highly doubt that the Royal Guard is the only major military force of Equestria, since the lands beyond Equestria are probably more savage and battle hardened than it would seem the light hearted ponies of Celestia's rule are. Think of it like a secret task force with a high combat prowess and espionage skills. Celestia would most likely have formed this team/task force after the Nightmare Moon incident, as it would have shaken her deeply and concerned her with the safety of her subjects. Anyway, this task force would take over as the Royal Guard when they go out to direct the front lines, acting as the intelligence officers and the higher rank generals of the Equestrian Army. So given that these things were happening in the background and Celestia would be able to use magic to set this all in motion when she hears of something happening, Equestria could have a full army in a matter of a few hours.
Not to mention that there is at least one god-like pony who can smoke the invading army with a well-aimed solar flare or something. Unless the other countries have similar god-like creatures, then they are already way out-gunned. |
