I practiced with pencil and paper for a little while until I had kind of a feel for the pony art style, even then, adjusting from pencil and paper to tablet made some of that progress go down the drain, but I adapted fairly quickly. To be honest, I just bought a pen & touch because ti was in my price range. So far it's worked wonders, and I love it to death.

You don't need anything too expensive. Most of the higher-end ones are due to size and slightly increased pressure detection. If you're looking up at your screen instead of at the tablet, size doesn't matter. And the pressure sensitivity jump isn't very noticeable, nor does it affect drawing much.
