"Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa
Hold it right there, mister. Although my stuff sticks out a mile away to most people who have described it or reacted to it, I HATE it when artists try to defend themselves when they mention "style". I'm always looking to change up shapes, proportions, etc, when drawing characters. This lineup wasn't to be edgy or shocking or offensive or intentionally "unique". It simply came after me watching about ten episodes and then thinking hard about how each of the girls would look when humanized. Some of them may look a little "manly", but that was because I had seen other human lineups before mine that all made them very feminine. I didn't see any contrast between the characters so I tried to push it so some of the characters weren't so prissy, and had no reason to appear so based on how they acted in the show. I tried to make the design appropriate for their personalities. Rainbow Dash is cocky, but has some insecurities. So I made her build a bit squarish. Her body gives her confidence and yet makes her feel insecure since she knows it's not the ideal body for a woman. And so on. Would you like me to explain AJ's and Rarity's? Again, I've been trying to find ways to change some of the designs, don't worry. This is just me defining at the moment."
To add something else about the Rainbow Dash I drew, I think that she would be more sensitive about her hair than Rarity would be. It's the last thing that makes her look like a girl. So yes, she does look quite masculine, but I think with the basic personality she has on the show, this could be an interesting mix. |
