Most Earth pony cities are based off America, but Ponyville is more akin to a European village. This is presumably because most Earth ponies are farmers, but what little we see of Manehattan seems to show what those Earth Ponies in high societal standing are like.

Canterlot is a unicorn city, and seems to be kind of a mix of Middle Eastern architecture and that kind of 'Disney-esque' castle design with the pointed spires. If you know anything about the historical culture of the Mid-East, you know this is pretty appropriate.

Cloudsdale is part of a greater Greco-Roman theme the Unicorns have. Considering both their cultures put an emphasis on sport it's also rather fitting.
