I like the show because it just doesn't FEEL like a show for little girls. It feels more like a cartoon that I would've enjoyed just as much at a younger age as I do now. It doesn't rely on bottom-of-the-barrel brain-rotting jokes like gross humor or Spongebob levels of retarded in order to be appealing, and has intelligent characters that aren't just added for the sake of being killjoys or props.

Regardless as to whether the audience is for adults or children, cartoons shouldn't treat the viewers like idiots, an unfortunate trend I've seen lately. FiM is simple and can be taken at face value, yet doesn't forcefeed the audience sugary pablum, which I find respectable.

Well, let's add a distinction here, shall we?

Being part of the fandom is different than simply being a fan. Participating in the fandom means posting in the threads, talking about community activity, and generally being a part of some sort of web community. This could just be posting regularly in the general threads or constantly drawing pony fanart and writing fanfics and swapping them other fans, who also wish to discuss fanart and fanfics.

A fan though. Just a plain ol' FAN. They like they show and maybe.. MAYBE they might buy some merch if they think its good quality and its something they actually want. They don't let the show change their life, they don't dedicate any more time to it other than watching the episodes or whatever.

It's essentially the distinction between being a ponyfag and being a brony.

Ponyfags tend to hate bronies because bronies make them look like giant faggots by association.
