Basically for backgrounds you want to sketch out the basic shapes first, fill them with a base colour, and then add details like highlights and shadows. They don't have to be too detailed, but they should highlight the form of the object. So try to keep the object's form in mind.

If your using a digital program, you can and should make use of multiple layers to break up the drawing into manageable chunks. Always bear in mind where your light is coming from to make everything consistent.

Aside from that, just keep practising. You'll get better with repetition, so don't be discouraged if your first drawings aren't up to your standards.

Oh gosh, uh. Landscapes are where I started when I was learning to draw, so getting into doing them seems forever ago.

Some things that I did (and still do) are go out into the garden. I get all comfy on the ground close to some plants and started drawing the stalks and stems as if they were trees and the little rocks ext larger pieces of landscape. It gave me something different to draw than ocean/rolling hills. It was also a convenient excuse to turn honey bees into giant monsters destroying the landscape, because I was a destructive kid.

I tend to do quick and small landscape images in my sketchbook, just a couple of inches wide and slightly rendered.

A character in an environment is a whole new kettle of fish than just a character or an environment.
