I don't think she was slumbering at all, considering the first thing she said to Celestia was that she "missed her so much". That would imply she was consciously aware of the passage of time.

She may not have had control of her actions as Nightmare Moon, especially if NMM is an entirely separate entity that possessed her as Faust implied, but she was definitely witness to the entire thing.

I like to think they are the same pony however. Two sides of the same coin, and that NMM was just the physical manifestation of what is essentially a god being overcome with jealous rage.

Plus, it also opens up the door for her to someday return in a non antagonistic role, which I think would be neat.

There are a lot of ways she could have known how much time had passed (a calendar), her name fading into legend was evident from no one knowing who she was, and she can move quite fast as mist or whatever so she could have gone to Canterlot and then to Ponyville or whatever.

Interesting to note is that Celestia new exactly where to find the girls the instant she was released, just as Nightmare knew how to find Celestia.

There is really no evidence whatsoever for them both being anything but fully aware while they were subdued.
