It takes a very long time to develop the experience to not need guides of any sort. You use those guides until you eventually no longer require them. For example, with proportions you would want to mark the height of the character and break it down to properly determine relational distances between body parts early on, but eventually you will be able to eye it just fine.

There's no harm in making use of them no matter the anatomical skill level. If nothing else, most artists will make use of gesture drawings and work on top of that.

A skeleton for a drawing is like a rough draft for a piece of writing. Likewise, in animation, an animatic serves as a skeleton for the finished sequences.

Construction lines are not training wheels, although they are effective in helping people learn to draw.
