Where the hay was that big lug?
Applejack trotted across the fields of freshly-bucked apple trees, past the buckets upon buckets filled with the new harvest, vibrant reds and greens. The air was as crisp as the fresh fruit piled about the orchards. Still no sign of her big brother.
She'd checked the north pasture, the fields as far as the west gate, and every orchard in between. He had to still be on the farm somewhere. He must have slipped by her while she was working, and headed back to the farmhouse. She rounded the barn and climbed the splintering wooden steps on the porch. Granny Smith was there in her rocking chair, and the orange filly nodded to her. "Evenin', Gran'." she smiled despite her weariness. Granny barely responded. No doubt she was lost in thought again. She got that way in the late afternoons, just before dusk set in.
AJ stamped into the house and looked around the halls. She wiped sweat from her forehead and adjusted the brim of her hat with one hoof. If Mac was going to disappear and leave her to finish the last orchard on her own, he better have a danged good reason.
Applejack began down the hall, checking the kitchen. Maybe the big lug had decided to surprise her by starting on dinner. But unsurprisingly, only dirty pots and pans were out to greet her. Her frustration grew. She checked the den. Applebloom was lying on the rug, coloring something on a piece of school paper. "Hey Sis!" she smiled, without taking her eyes off her coloring page. "Applebloom, have you seen Big Mac 'round here anywhere?" "Yeah!" She said, switching out an orange crayon for a red one, "He went on back to his room I think." Applejack frowned. If he was taking a nap at this time in the afternoon...! |
