Whenever people draw or talk about Celestia being this mothering figure for Twilight - doubly so whenever she was shown to be as such in the show. It's just a reminder that she was essentially taken away from her parents (voluntarily all around, presumably, but still) because she was so gifted. Celestia became her new mother, and her real mother and father appear to have exited her life. There's no place in her life where they fit, no part of her that can really be ascribed to them and not to Celestia.
A lot of child prodigies will develop a belief their parents aren't *really* their parents. They might manifest this directly, believing they were adopted, or subconsciously, distancing themselves from their parents and trying to attach themselves to someone they idolize as "worthy" or superior enough to better suit them.
It's a real thing and can be quite traumatic and affecting to all involved in a variety of ways if not handled. I know that the real reason her parents aren't show is narrative convenience in what is a crowded children's cartoon, but the implications of their absence are unavoidable.
Would Twilight have become so socially stunted if she'd stayed close with her parents? Would she have had as much trouble fitting in, or finding her place? Would she place as much anxiety in her relationship to the Princess? She has likely suffered for her distance. |
