I'm not sure, but I think I figured out the problem with OCs. Whenever you creates some kind of fan work you are saying something about that world, describing how that fictional universe is set up in your mind, or how you want it to be.

Consider what an OC says. A tame OC would simply imply that this character exists, nothing serious. The problem is when not only is it a self insert, but the OC is supposedly very significant.

What this says is that you think that your OC, and by extension YOU, should play a significant role in the fictional universe. I see this as an act of extreme arrogance. The creator isn't some fantastic person deserving recognition, its just some lowly fan.

Consider this douche, he's essentially saying that he's so great that a character from the show would be romantically interested in him and that his avatar should be included into the show.

If you come here with an OC, everybody is going to connect the OC with self-insert, unless you state otherwise. You'll still get gb2ponychan, but probably way less. I think the self insert OCs being used as an avatar is tied into the name/tripfag problem over at ponychan as well.

To me, names are for people to remember you, and on these boards, we should remember you if you contribute something, you're a writefag or drawfag or something.

But if you don't contribute and still namefag about, it often times comes off as a demand for attention and recognition where neither is deserved.

And with a pony avatar, you are demanding even more attention, and if that one OC is the only thing you've created, you still don't deserve the recognition you are demanding.

But for contributor such as madmax, Plantman, etc, their avatars are acceptable because it helps us to recognize them and they do deserve that because of what they contribute.
