I myself tend to function as a perfectionist and know how painful it is when you screw up minute things. After watching the show I think Rarity is bordering on OCD. Her main goal is to be beautiful and fabulous, with such social limits on those definitions they are impossible to "achieve".

I don't think she hates herself, but she probably comes the closest to doing so among the mane cast. She's frequently dissatisfied with both her own work and her position in life, despite doing very well in both areas. I have no idea what the topic is so I'm posting my own interpretation.

I kinda peg Celestia as a more hands-off ruler, who could well be a worshipped god-empress or absolute tyrant, but got bored of that centuries ago. She mostly deals with problems as they come and coaches particularly talented ponies to achieve great things, while letting the masses govern themselves in general.

She's remained princess while Equestria has been a confederation, feudal state, republic, dictatorship, communist state, anarcho-capitalist syndicate, magocracy, and for a brief period hive mind. (funny story about that...)

Applejack, like the other two I mentioned, seems to mainly have a problem in that she has a strong image of herself- she bucks apples, runs the farm, and is the most dependable pony in Ponyville. The problem they all run into is that whenever something happens that threatens their self-image, they get upset in their various ways because their world is being torn down.

When you think of how pony society kinda revolves around your identity being symbolically tattooed on your butt, it's not surprising that a lot of ponies would have issues when their identity isn't what they think it should be.
