Was she simply physically marooned on the moon just sitting there and unable to fly back through space? Or was it more of a mystic seal sort of deal? That's what I'm leaning toward. Just being more or less frozen in carbonite on the moon seems pretty bland. And imprisoning deities/magical beings is never just a physical jail, they never seem to have bodies while jailed at all. So when you consider her inherent connection to the moon (or vice-versa,) it makes sense to me that Celestia somehow exploited that to forcibly merge them or something. So she was stuck in the moon in a manner of speaking, but not literally bodily stuck there. But I'd imagine she was more vaguely aware of the outside world while sealed than the Forsaken were. If anything, it helps to explain her getting all evil from loneliness. That wouldn't be an issue if she were unconscious entirely.

In any case, it sounds like it's unclear enough that it would be hard to say what's right and wrong when it comes to depicting Luna on the Moon. Luna sitting among grey moon dust and craters or mystical and abstract-style depictions would be equally correct.

The whole thing might have been a prophecy, the pilot episodes. To be honest, Twilight's reading the equivalent of a fairy tale that everyone believes is fiction. The only characters who actually know are Luna and Celestia. Maybe Celestia did a drastic and daring move, not knowing if she'd ever see Luna again, and purposefully let the actions take their course during the pilots. One thousand years is a long time to plan.

So yeah, the Elements and Luna were simply forgotten. I don't think I was on the same page in the last post or two so I'll get back up to speed, For her return, these are the things I think could have happened:

1. Celestia probably didn't want to confront her sister still being like that. Her emotions would probably get the best of her, seeing her beloved sibling in a vengeful state of mind.
2. Celestia KNEW that Twilight could do it, and if it meant her getting a social life, that's just an added bonus. Win-win for her.
3. Celestia DID get beaten and captured by Luna, but it was never on-screen or implied.

Or some combination of the three.
