Sol. Originally therer were 3 sisters: Celestia was the eldest, and tended the stars which forever hung in the heavens. Sol was the middle child, who raised the Sun at day. Luna was the Youngest, and raised the Moon at night.
When Luna became Nightmare Moon, Sol and Celestia fought. The older and more rational child, Celestia urged forgiveness and wished to imprison Luna until such time as she could be saved from her own darkness. Sol, being firey-tempered and arrogant, wished to destroy their youngest sister entirely. In the end, Celestia was forced to banish both of her sisters. While Luna was sent to the moon where she would not endanger the other ponies, Celestia had other plans for Sol. Seeing that her anger must be tempered by contact with other ponies, Celestia stripped Sol of her powers and sent her to Ponyville to live the life of an ordinary pony.
At first, Sol was enraged. But in time, she came to enjoy the peaceful, idyllic life. She made friends, took lovers, mourned the dead, and partook in the life of an ordinary pony. When a dozen years had past, Celestia came to Sol and offered to restore her to her position as co-regent, but Sol begged to be allowed to stay among her new friends. Although Celestia was lonely with both her sisters gone, she could not refuse such a request.
And so, Sol has spent the last millennium living among the simple folk of Ponyville. Every few decades, she fakes her own death and takes a new name, revealing only to the special few who are closest to her--her friends, her lovers, her children--the true nature of her being. And so Celestia became responsible for the Stars, the Sun, and the Moon. |
