Don't you dare sit there and praise yourself for your "masterpiece." It's got less plot and writing skill behind it than a sixth-grader's unwanted civil war report. When the non-torture part of the story can be fully accounted for in a two-sentence summary, it ceases to be "art" and is just "torture porn."
It's like Hostel or The Human Centipede: a shitty waste of time that was only made for shock value. If anything, those movies are more wholesome, because they actually have a lower torture-to-plot ratio.
It has effectively burned into the mind of this community a misconception of what "[Grimdark]" means. [Grimdark] stories should be used to describe stories that are more violent and darker-toned than usual. However, Cupcakes effectively expanded the scale and scope of what [Grimdark] covers to a much, much darker place than it was intended for.
So, because someone thought it would be funny to write something so graphic, people have a misconstrued conception of what [Grimdark] means. What this means is that now, needlessly, authors who want to include more mature themes in their stories have to weigh a more heavily reduced audience and remaining true to their inspiration versus being able to "tone it down" in exchange for a much larger audience.
[Grimdark] could have had a much higher esteem in this community; but someone went and fucked it all up. The worst part is that it was so horribly written, so there was no artistic merit for doing so. |
