In an attempt to make up for her early death, he added experimental wings and a horn to her; his goal was to make the world's first alicorn without any royal blood.

The result was disastrous. The zombie-like pony ended up destroying the facility and killing all of the ponies within it. The ensuring destruction clipped her wings and broke her horn in half, preventing the pony from using her new abilities and making all of the experiments completely worthless. This reanimated, murderous pony, incapable of thoughts or feelings, now roams Equestria all alone, waiting miserably for her second death.

Theory: The current Celestia is really Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon murdered her sister Celestia at night of the Summer Sun Celebration. Her "defeat" was faked after she destroyed the real Elements of Harmony as shown in Episode 2 to conceal her identity and take her sisters place. "Luna" is just another one of Nightmare Moon's shadowdopplers that she can manifest and is never subsequently seen again. "Celestia" conveniently reappears after the confrontation and assumes control once more out of nowhere and becomes a complete troll and despot which belie her true nature as the sinister Dark Princess in her sunny sister's form. The mane cast is completely duped and their "elements of harmony" were just a illusion and Twilight's speech is just bullshit and Nightmare Moon is playing along and acting while controlling the magic.

Luna only "returns" in season 2 as Nightmare Moon when the facade is broken and she assumes power openly after having fully consolidating her rule while posing as her sister.
