"Hey Dinky, try not to put out an eye!" called another young filly, teal with beige hair. Several other students laughed.
The paper with the scrap of cloth fell forgotten to Dinky's desk, along with the needle and thread, as she launched herself at the teal one with a bloodcurdling snarl. She pinned her and began to pound her face with her front hooves.
Mr. White rushed over and teeked Dinky into the air, where she squirmed uselessly, snarling and spitting.
Ms. Rarity was aghast. "Gracious. I'll just stand over... here," she said quietly.
---
"Carefully," said Ms. Rarity, watching the needle glide through the fabric. "Carefully... Perfect! Oh my dear, you're a natural at this!" she squealed.
Dinky looked up with a great big smile on her face. "Thanks, Ms. Rarity!" Then she returned to adding lace to her finest dress.
"Thank you so much, Ms. Rarity," said Derby Hooves. The wall-eyed mailmare lay on the couch, watching Dinky sew. "I'm no good with the horn magic stuff, as you might guess." She fluffed her wings for effect.
"I quite understand," said Ms. Rarity, still trying to figure out which eye to look at when she talked to Dinky's mother. "That school environment simply encourages these foals to be monstrous toward each other." It was the left one, she was sure this time. "Have you considered homeschooling?"
Derby's right eye fixed on Ms. Rarity's gaze. "Single mother with a job?"
Ms. Rarity blushed. The disconcerting effect was making her blurt out whatever came to mind. "Oh. Right." She laughed nervously. |
