Being a self hating artist (author, musician, etc.) is actually very healthy, for the reasons you stated. What I think the comic is referring to, and what bugs me personally, is when artists feel the need to respond to any compliment with "Oh my stuff is awful, I'm really not happy with the way that turned out, I could've done so much better..." Did anybody ever finish that speculation over chronology? About all I remember is that Fall Weather Friends takes place before Winter Wrap Up despite the latter airing first, which was done to give the idea of the ponies' place in keeping the seasons changing a more focused introduction.
