The screen flashed green for a moment. Symbols began to appear in rows and columns across the screen, and Pinkie understood that they were a message spelled out in dozens of different languages. Each line was different, but to her amazement she could read one of the very first ones near the top:
>English? Press for information.
Pinkie Pie had no idea what ‘English’ was, but she could find the key just fine. Hitting it brought up a menu, all legible this time, with a short paragraph preceding it.
>This device holds records which describe the history of a species known as the human race. Using the interface before you, you can navigate through archives which contain the collective knowledge of humanity. Topics are organized by category below. The discovery of this device means that humans no longer exist on this planet; however, through you, it is possible for their achievements to survive. It is for you to judge their value, and to determine if they are deserving of remembrance.
The gravity of this statement went largely over Pinkie’s head. What was a human, anyway? Still, she understood that whoever made this machine wanted someone to read the things they’d stored in it. Browsing the list of categories, she settled on one that sounded interesting: Technology. Hitting the key again, she brought up a second menu, this one longer than the first. She didn’t know what any of them meant, again getting the feeling that Twilight would recognize a few, so she chose the very first one at the top of the screen. Words appeared, long blocks of text that were both elegant in their clarity and intoxicating in their profundity, complex concepts and advanced technical knowledge conveyed perfectly in only a couple of sentences. Pinkie, dumbstruck, began to make her way down the page, experiencing pure rational thought in written form. |
