05/27/11(Fri)17:34 No.26307792On the right, you have the crazies who are constantly scanning for subliminal sex and hidden homosexuality. On the left, you have the nutters who break down and deconstruct every gesture and word for even the tiniest sign of racism, ageism, ableism, heterosexism, heteronormativity, or general political incorrectness.
And people wonder why I have problems with (second wave) feminism.
Hell, these people are so hard to satisfy, you could probably even trick them into devouring each other, or even, themselves!
Incidentally, while the author focuses all of her energy on Rainbow Dash, I would definitely call Applejack a tomboy.
Granted, the premise of the series is flimsy---the monarch of an entire civilization sends one of her subjects out to make friends, just because? Say what now?
Well, and I would like it if more cartoons demonstrated greater respect for introverts, misanthropes, and loners, and didn't always prescribe 'teamwork' or 'friendship' as the medicine to cure all woes. But, to be fair, a lot of adult shows suffer from the same problem, too, and it's all because extroverts rule the world. C'est la vie.
As for the "smart-shaming," based on the three episodes I've seen so far, it seems like the shit actually tends to hit the fan whenever a character begins to dismiss or doubt either their own or someone else's knowledge or skills! Even more than friendship, the whole friggin' show seems to be about finding and living your purpose or vocation. |
