A good way to check yourself is to turn the image into greyscale. You can see just how well your values are reading. I'll turn an image into greyscale for just a second to see what I need to intensify and then go back to colour.

Its pretty common for some artists to paint an entire image in greyscale and then add colours in an overlay layer. I really, really do not suggest this. It makes images look so much more dead to me, because the mix of colours is so much... less. You can often tell when an image was done with this. I hate seeing things shaded with grey.
However, it is a completely valid technique and you might like it. I hate even mentioning it, but ah well. Personal preference, etc.
