05/24/11(Tue)12:26 No.26215720>>26215695 The night sky, Twilight thought, was a beautiful thing. Not in the same way a flower or a painting was; with a flower you knew what you were looking at. You could understand it, scientifically. But Twilight had no idea what a star was. She could name them and study their movements and gaze at them through telescopes all she liked, but she still had no idea as to what a star was really like. She had always wondered about this. Questions posed to Celestia had gained only cryptic answers and promises that perhaps one day she would know. Going further back, her parents had always told her that the night was like a huge blanket covering Equestria, and that the stars were tiny little holes in the fabric. This explanation did not satisfy little Twilight. “But what’s behind the blanket?” She would ask. But her father would simply tell her to go to sleep and not worry about such things. But she wasn’t worried. She was excited. What if the stars were even brighter up close? What if there were new worlds full of new things to explore and learn about? What if, somewhere up there in the sky, there was a strange, strange creature looking up and asking the same thing? It was impossible, of course, that she would ever find out. Pegasus Ponies had tried hundreds of times to reach the stars, but the air grew too thin for them to breathe and the temperatures got so cold that they would all turn back before they got anywhere near a star. This made Rainbow Dash’s personal attempts to succeed where so many others had failed all the more foalish. This particular idea for impressing the Wonderbolts had to be called off after a week of trying when Dash’s wings froze mid flight and only managed to thaw meters from the ground. This led to a very pale Rainbow Dash to declare that, though she most definitely wasn’t afraid, travelling to the stars was impossible and therefore not a goal worth pursuing. |
