The sun wasn't quite shining that day. A few clouds had turned to several more clouds, and then more - and things had become overcast. Not dull, but maybe more gray. The birds gave half-hearted warbles, save for the overenthusiastic bluejay that always perched on the outskirts of town near by Polly's shop. The sky refused to shine, it refused to rain - it said "no" to all questions and pleas.
The orchard could use for some rain to soak. The apples had enough to get by, even enough to have a well-furnished season. No number of "eeyup" from Big Mac could alter the tides or the rains. More maddeningly Rainbow Dash couldn't promise any given rainfall, only coverage or attempted storms.
Applejack spat angrily on the roadside approaching town. It mixed poorly with the sunbaked dirt. She had to think it was a good thing, maybe, no rain to trudge through with a double-basket order of apples and a new pair of fancy boots.
She looked down at the spats and quit congratulating the weather for not muddyin' her giddy. That was Rarity talk.
Applejack, thought the orange-yellow pony, was not a pretty or very girly name. It was the name of a good uncle - a proud stallion who'd died in a mine. He was a hard stallion, but a fair stallion - but just that. A stallion. His namesake was something hard and unyielding. Sure, she was stubborn --
The ribbons she'd laid carefully in her hair flapped at an eyelid in the light breeze kicking up from the west.
She was stubborn, but she wasn't unfeminine. Not quite. Maybe a might not.
She opened the door and took a deep breath of cupcake scented air. |
