OC on its own is one thing, and different fandoms have different tolerance levels for them. They also have their own distinct signs, usually of major canon violation, that identify a character as an instant Mary Sue.

Ponyfans are relatively tolerant since OC are kinda encouraged by the subject matter, but there's still limits. Alicorns have long been a big mary sue sign (usually the mount of one) and considering the only two seen in this show are pretty much living gods, they are not to be taken lightly.

Late game arrival on this post, but they kind of give off a mary-sue feel to them in context to Friendship is Magic. I know there were winged unicorns in the previous gens I think, but since in FiM they're basically god-like it gives fan characters a negative connotation.
