"Why would you be? I'm fine! All - all four …" the words trailed off, broken into sobs.
"All four hooves?" Whooves extended, hunkering down against the wheel and wrapping a hoof around the mare's shaking frame.
Lyra simply nodded, wiping a back of a hoof on her puffy eyes, wicking away tears and more than a fair bit of snot.
"It was an accident, you know that." Wooves said firmly.
"B-but … I should have been there."
Whooves gave her a stern look. "You were there when she needed you. You drove her right to the hospital. I've NEVER seen anyone move so fast."
Lyra sniffed, "Really?"
"Really."
Whooves smiled, "Really. You're a very strong woman. Holding her hoof through the whole surgery? Even when she was out?"
"It's what a mother does," Lyra murmured.
There was silence, despite the cicada calls.
"You know, she'll walk again soon." Whooves leveled, rising back to his hooves.
In the half-light, the look on Lyra's face was a sunrise after a long troubled night.
"Really?"
"Really," Whooves nodded, extending a hoof for Lyra to hold. |
