Originally it was going to go with daughter hug, "pwease stop drinking mommy" and maybe leaving Romana. But that would have been shit.

Another ending that was there for the LONGEST time was Berry does leave at the end and then we change perspectives to Romana who's sobbingly confessing her fears to Bon Bon and there everything would be revealed to have been a misunderstanding and she would resolve to talk to Berry tomorrow (but of course she'd be gone). This would have been lazy, boring, and unsatisfying.

I myself am ultimately happy with the more ambiguous "life goes on" ending.

As for what Romana did or did not do, that's your call. Either way, every one of them made mistakes that they're gonna have to deal with.
