I wanted to empathize, wanted them to conduct themselves like reasonable adults struggling with taboo desires, and then experience the tragedy of them being victims in an intolerant society. Instead, what I got was two people who walked face first off a cliff. They were victims of their own unthinking, not society. I found it a horrible message to have them gay, as they are terrible role models for what it means to be homosexual. That's my beef with the movie.
