I always wondered what was with sending her to the moon for a thousand years. I mean, I guess I get that princess Celestia cannot, by herself, use the elements to destroy NMM and free Luna, but that means that one of two things must be true:
1) Celestia needs to find a half-dozen ponies who are loyal, generous, etc., and who are all friends. Given that she has the entire population of Equestria to draw on, that should be pretty easy to come up with. In which case, Celestia is an evil bitch for making the banishment 1000 years instead of, say, a weekend.
2) The 6th element needs to be some super-special pony who can harness the power of the rainbow or some shit. This explains the 1000 year bit because Celestia was selectively breeding ponies over hundreds of generations to produce Twilight, the pony Kwisatz-Haderach. Unfortunately, this casts Celestia in the role of the Bene Gesserit, and guess what? They aren't exactly the good guys, either.
